Thomas Stevens / Stephens Where To Go From Here
« on: Friday 24 October 14 01:38 BST (UK) »
Thomas STEVENS / STEPHENS was buried 18 Jun 1837 at St Pauls, Hammersmith age shown on Death Cert 27/29 years  (father's name not shown). He was married to Sophia GEORGE (widow) on the 21 Jul 1828 which would make Thomas only 18/20 years old at the time of his marriage.  Sophia was born 1794 at Acton which would make her about 14 years older than Thomas if his age at death is correct.

I have been unable to find Thomas's Birth Register due to so little information I have of him.  He may have had a sister named Hannah who married Thomas LEONARD in 1829 St Mary Abbotts.

Any suggestions to find the correct Birth Register for Thomas?  Thank you

Hi Heintje,

Do you have the marriage cert? Perhaps the name of the father is listed on it? Where were they married?

The marriage was pre 1837, so there will only be a PR entry.  Names of witnesses may help.

Re his birth, again pre 1837 so you will be reliant on a christening entry . But at the moment that could be absolutely anywhere in the world!

Did Sophia register his death? If not, how do you know the one who died in 1837 is the same guy as was married to Sophia in 1828?
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Could you let us know the children you've traced back on please.  Then we can see who was where when.  Might help to know.

I can see a Sophia Hanson marrying Abraham George, but I can't find a Sophia born 1794 in Acton on any census.

James bn 1829, Elizabeth & Abraham bn 1834 (twins) Henry 1836.  Abraham died 1838, Elizabeth marr William Skilton, Henry nothing more known, James marr Eliza Mockett.  I am descended from James & Eliza.  All born Middlesex.

Thomas was buried St Pauls Hammersmith.

Thank you.

Yes, my researcher some years ago found Sophia Hanson marrying Abraham George but from memory there was much confusion.  I'll need to go back into my files.  A Sophia Hanson was bapt: 12 Sep 1781 at Acton but census shows the Sophia who marr: Thomas was born abt 1794.

Many thanks

I had a professional researcher some years back who checked the burial records in the church along with the church warden.  So I assume Sophia was named but I don't have a printout of the death record.  No cameras in cell phones back then unfortunately.  Thomas was buried at St Pauls, Hammersmith, a labourer.  He died 18 Jun 1837 - bad timing.

Thanks
Margaret

Hi Heintje,

I don't have the marriage register of Thomas to Sophia but I have the one where she married Willaim Snooks on 23 Sep 1838.  She was named Sophia Stephens, widow, father Charles STEPHENS.  Christian name may be correct but surname definitely not.

Thank you
Margaret
