Bailey family
« on: Tuesday 28 October 14 01:15 GMT (UK) »
Am looking for my great-great grandparents John Bailey and Sophronia Chase.Someone told me that they came from Surrey and that John's father's name was Henry.I know that they immigrated to the United States. My great grandfather George Francis Bailey was born in New Hampshire in 1853.

Do you know approx when John and Sophronia (great name!) were born? Do you know if they married in the US or England?

And welcome to Rootschat! ;D

Just looking at the birth indexes. Cant see any Sophronia Chase. There are a surprising number of Sophronias (I Had never heard of it before) - where did you find out that her surname was Chase? Might she have been married before and thus born not as a Chase?
Though , silly me, of course if she was having a child in 1853, she would have been born before Civil Registration began in 1837, so there will not be a birth reg in the indexes! I'll think again.
WHen did they emigrate?

Thank you for your reply. The only information that I have is a marriage record from Vermont(1890),where George Francis lists his parents as John Bailey and Sophronia Chase.Someone on the facebook geneology page said she believed that they came from the UK and suggested Rootschat.

Im wondering if they married in USA, maybe born there too, and maybe it was an earlier generation that emigrated. Maybe you can ask a mod to move this to a USA board to try and trace them back there?

Hi and welcome :)

What source do you have for the names of George Francis' parents - and have you found him with them on a census?

There is a thread here citing the same names:

http://lequebecunehistoiredefamille.com/communaute/bailey

...but the family referred to in the reply was in Wisconsin in 1860, with no sign of a son George Francis:

OK - I see the names on George's Vermont marriage in 1890:

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XF4G-G53

George's birthplace specified as Pembroke, N.H., and his age of 33 would suggest birth abt 1857?

The only sure facts that I have is that George Francis(my great grandfather)married in 1890 then appeared on census as living in Stanbridge Village Qc (where my grandfather was born)and then Magog Qc.I have nothing concrete before that except the names of his parents on the marriage record.Probably the best thing to do would be to try to search US records.
