When did Francis STEWARD come to Australia
« on: Tuesday 28 October 14 04:46 GMT (UK) »
Francis Howard Steward was born in Norfolk in 1839.  He was last seen in England at the time of the 1861 census when he was working in Woolwich.  He next appears marrying in Tasmania Australia in 1873.  By 1875 he is living in Ballarat Victoria Australia where he remains for the rest of his life.  I have been unable to find his entry into Tasmania or anywhere else in Australia.  Any help with this long standing brick wall would be most appreciated.

What was his occupation in 1863, and in 1873 when he married?  Might be hard to trace him if he was ships crew.  He also might also be found as simply "Mr Steward" (possibly "Stewart") especially if he came unassisted.

 - if this is his marriage in 1873, he is listed as "of Melbourne".

Hi,  thank you for answering my query.  From other documents I have his occupation was given as Overseeer.  His father in law had large farming operations in Tasmania, so he may have been working for him.  Although saying he was of Melbourne doesn't fit with that scenario.  As they appear to have returned to Ballarat  (they would have sailed via Melbourne) very soon after they were married makes me think he already had a base here.  It has just occurred to me that his father in law may have had a property in Victoria. This would explain how he could have met his wife.  Another strange fact is he never worked on the land after being married.  He was always a railway labourer.  Your quite right about the Steward/Steward problem.  I have come up against it quite a few times.
As he was working as a carrier in the Woolwich ship yards in 1861 it is also a possibility he came as crew or even jumped ship.  No end to the possibilities as he could have also arrived at any state in Australia.  I shall just have to keep on digging.  I appreciate your help.
Cheers.  Pat

Hi,
Thank you for your reply to my query.  I am aware of that article, and others, which state this fact. Unfortunately I have been unable to find any thing about him in Victoria before his marriage.
Cheers, Pat.

I have noticed, on the 1861 Census, that there is a, Thomas Steward b 1844, with Francis could this be a brother, if they are, this may be them on the 1851 census

Francis Steward abt 1838
Thomas Steward abt 1844
Margarett Steward abt 1849
