Is the address from a census by any chance?

This 1902 Gloucestershire map is fairly detailed and gives names of cottages:
http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html

It might just be a matter of thoroughly looking over the map in the hope of spotting Rose Cottages.

There is a railway line nearby but it seems to be a distance from Woodcroft and closer to Tiddenham (though I don't know how the addresses worked, as both of those seem to be different places) - it may be that Tiddenham was slightly larger hence using it as part of the address to define where Woodcroft was? (no clue really, just guessing  ;)).

The reason I asked if the address was from a census is that you can check the enumerator's walk which often helps narrow down the area and gives some idea where to start looking ...

It is from an entry on probate,Benjamin D Butt left his wife Rose £525 in 1954,my husband remembers visiting an elderly lady with his father when he was very young,he remembers a cottage that you had to step down to and it was in the middle of nowhere apparently he remembers a railway line, the cottage was a few miles outside Chepstow from all accounts this was the closest guess we had to it,hubby was about 9 when Rose died

If you have a look at the area on google maps that description does fit with the area today. I was a little out with my estimate of dates  :-[ so it might be worth checking a later map than 1902.

It depends how determined you are to locate Rose Cottages, but you can subscribe to Old Maps (a month for £9.99) to get better access to the maps. Of course it might not be marked on any maps which is a risk you may or may not want to take.

An address search of the 1911 or 1901 censuses may also be worth a try (in case the name of the cottages remained the same), if someone can do that for you ...

Others may have other/better suggestions.

Hi
If you look on old maps at woodcroft 1974 1:2500
Find Woodcroft terrace just above it there is a pair of dotted lines leading to Rose Cottage, a building or buildings also show on earlier 1:2500 at the same location

If you find the same road on Google street view there is a name plate attached to a wooden fence Rose Cottage.

Hi, I was wondering if you managed to find a picture or information about 2 Rose Cottages because I have a relative who lived there and everything I've tried searching hasn't worked because I believe the old websites have shut down or I'm not able to use them.
Thanks,
S
