Help needed with German translation
« on: Saturday 01 November 14 11:55 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,
I'm not really a beginner to genealogy, been doing it on and off for 30 years or more! But I am new to this site so here goes.........
Half of my ancestry is Austrian and I am wondering if anyone knows the best way to get handwritten letters translated without incurring the huge costs of commercial translation services.
I have a bunch of letters written between my grandfather and great grandmother between the years 1938 -1942. My grandfather escaped Nazi Austria and went to the US. My great grandmother sadly perished in the Holocaust. There are probably 150+ letters. It would be enlightening for me to get the letters translated, especially the ones handwritten by my great grandmother, aged 80, Jewish and living alone in Vienna.

Thanks

This may be worth a try:

Google "google translate"  select the german button, type in the content of your letters in german, (in the box)  then press the english translation button.

Thanks,
I have used Google translate in the past, but the handwritten letters are written in 'high German' and as such are really difficult to decipher. They are also very long letters!!

Perhaps find a person from Germany to translate.  University or college student?
