Had he been married twice with having so different surnames on the children

The children's surname was Gregson but Lancashire BMD gives their mother's maiden name as well.

The mother's maiden name was Durham on most of them but was spelt in different ways on a couple of the birth registrations. If the registrar was a bit hard of hearing, he might write the wrong name.
