Catholic paris records in County Sligo, Ireland
« on: Tuesday 04 November 14 20:32 GMT (UK) »
Has anyone had success finding information through parish records for the Catholic church in Sligo, Ireland? I am searching Rosses Point, Coney Island, Killispubrone areas for a birth record of my grandfather between 1857-1863 before civil registration in Ireland. Either a birth or baptismal record.

Hi There & Welcome James

You will be looking for a baptismal cert as our civil registration only began in 1864.

What was your Grandfather's name ?

Do you have his parent's names ?

Tara

Thanks Tara, his name was James William Haran(Haren). His father's name was Hugh Haran, his mother's name Catherine Haran (Moffett). The name is spelled differently depending on who heard it and thought how it should be spelled---I guess

I shall have a route around.

I take it that you already have some information on him and that it's just his baptismal record that you are looking for !

In short, yes I have dealt with Sligo Church Records and I have found them to be quite good, well for the time that we are talking about !

Tara

WOW! you are right on it. Michael was James older brother, I don't know by how many years. Just a few-2 or 3? This is Michael and his family. They lived on Coney Island, Inishmulclohy, and his mother Catherine right next to them. Hugh Haran, My great grandfather died in 1900 and obviously isn't on this census. I'm sure he lived with Catherine before he died. But you are Spot On ! I was there in 2011. Surreal experience.

Hi James

I have been to Sligo a few times.

A stunningly beautiful county, but then again all of Ireland is  ;D

As per PM, rootsireland will probably be your only route !
