Sexton & Hogan, County Clare Ireland mid 1800's
« on: Thursday 06 November 14 05:57 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I hope someone can help me with information on my maternal great grandparents who emigrated from Ireland to Australia ( Hobart Tasmania ) in 1884.

John Sexton born 1847 and Jane Hogan Born 1853.
John was from County Clare, not sure where Jane originated from, I think she may have changed her Christian name.

I have lots of information of them in Tasmania but can find no trace of them in Ireland.

I would love to find their birth information and their marriage details. On the ship from Plymouth Jane is listed as Jane Sexton.

Thanking You in anticipation !!!!!!

Jude

Hi Jude,

I found some possible John Sexton's here http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/don_tran/bmd/sexton_baptisms_kilmurry_ibrickane.htm

John Sexton baptised 19/04/1846 Clondadrum mother Margaret O Brien father Micheal
John Sexton baptised 02/07/1848 Knocknagaoireach  mother Mary Walsh father Micheal

Do you know if the family were Roman Catholics?

Regards

Sarah

Thank you Sarah - yes John was Roman Catholic - there may have been a brother Daniel, also in Hobart , who was godparent to John's first born Francis, baptised in St Joseph's Catholic church Hobart Tasmania. Francis was born 3 months after they arrived inTasmania in 1884.

I’m also looking for a John Sexton, his daughter Bridget Mary Josephine was my maternal grandmother, she married Sergeant James William Higham in the Curragh chapel.   That is how I know her father was John Sexton.   I never knew my grandmother she died in London in 1934.  I don’t know her mother mother’s name but in the 1911 Bridget census put her place of birth as Ennistymon, County Clare.  She was born 1887.  She had two daughters, the first born In Gibraltar was my mother, the second in Richmond Yorkshire.  It’s the Irish ancestors that I’m stuck on.

She married in 1897 full age

So she must have been born in the early to mid 1870s.

Hi Bridget,
I’ve found more information on my Sextons and Hogans since my original post in 2014. They both came from Mullagh near Milltown Malbay in County Clare. John Sexton’s parents were Frances Sexton and Susan Sexton.
There is a blog written by a DNA confirmed Sexton cousin
sextonofkilmurryibrickaneparish.blogspot
With lots ofSexton information.
Hope this helps
Jude
