His birthplace on the 1871 census transcription has been given as you state 'Kyebenburn' but the original page actually states Kjobenhavn which is indeed Copenhagen.

A scan or picture of the letter that references "Madam Jensen Thoiguard" would be useful.
You may find the family listed with a patronymic surname (Jensen) + a surname relating to the place (~gaard?)

I can find references to names like Thougaard, Thielgaard, Thorgaard...

Showing, yet again, the importance of looking at the original documents, and not relying on transcriptions! ;D ;D

How about this for a possibility?
http://www.ddd.dda.dk/soeg_person_enkel_uk.asp
search in København
for Peter Julius Høÿgaard

He is found in the 1845 census, aged 2.  His father is listed as Peter Jensen Høÿgaard, aged 30, sømand (sailor), his mother Else Elizabet Jensen

By the 1860 census, Else Elisabeth Jensen is listed as a widow, with son Peter Julius Jensen, aged 18, (and his older brother) both working as "skibsdreng" ("ships boy").  There are a number of younger siblings as well.

(Side note - not every year is fully indexed)

This would appear to be the marriage of the parents:

Not 100% pinned down yet but bears further investigation I would think.

Danish archives online, you can access scans of the original church books from here
http://www.sa.dk/content/dk/ao-forside

There do seem to be other Peter Julius Jensens in the census, but this looked like the best bet in terms of father also being Peter, father's occupation, and father being definitely deceased by the time your Peter married (although don't see any hint that his father was Peter Julius, he seems to have been plain Peter Jensen).

Hi jpankfolly, I have always wondered about the "Danish Sea Captain" that my Grandmother used to tell me about as a  Child, and I think I've finally found him! I've never really looked that hard but on a lazy Boxing day I've done a lot of trawling and achieved quite a lot. Seems like you have been searching for a while and the posts that have come up on your behalf look very promising. I'm going to stop now and have another look tomorrow.
