Gloucester: William Thomas BURGE, born c1847.

Hello,

I hope this is not a wild goose chase, but has anyone come across William Thomas BURGE born 1847 most probably in Bristol.  There are no other references, except he was sentenced to 3 years penal servitude at the Bristol Sessions on 05/01/1861, was held at Parkhurst Prison until 11/07/1863 when he was released on license.

Should anyone be able to offer some biography I would be more than grateful.

Freebmd has quite a few William Burge entries born 1846/7 with Somerset as a birthplace.  The 1851 has 5 entries born 1846-1848 but without more info as to his exact birthplace it's difficult to know which is the right person

If he was definitely born in Bristol in 1847, perhaps his Mother married Mr Burge shortly after his birth and so he was not registered as Burge, but some other name?

How did you get back to him?

Are you descended from one of his children or siblings?  Further details may help to pinpoint the right person

I am sorry but the details quoted in my original posting are all I have.

Dropping the "Thomas" makes the search immeasurably harder and, as my interest is academic not familial, I think it may be diplomatic to mark my research "No result"!!!

I wonder if I could re-open this case with some more details.

It seems his parents were Thomas and Elizabeth BURGE and in 1863 they were living at No.1,  Stones Buildings, Boot Lane, Bedminster, Bristol, Gloucester.   Sometimes his christian names were transposed to Thomas William, although this has not helped in my research.

It may not help, but nothing ventured etc..........................

Exactly what info are you looking for?

Is he on the 1871 onwards censuses?

Is there a birth registration that would confirm his birthplace?

As you now know his parents names - have you checked the 1851 census to establish his birthplace?

The full extent of my knowledge has been quoted above and, after a thorough search of all available Indexes (to me anyway), there are no tangible results proving his continuing existence after July 1863 when he returned to his mother at the address cited.   Unfortunately, he did not confirm his place of birth in any criminal record that I have viewed.
