In the marriage post, it says that Provost Kirkpatrick was cautioner (caur) for the man and woman, i.e. he stood surety for their good behaviour and their seriousness about marrying within forty days.

Well, they certainly didn't seem to be in Kirkcudbright for long - and why would the provost of KD be cautioner - it's a way from Kirkcudbright ???

I think Kirkpatrick is the surname of the provost.

I think that I'd like to know more about the offspring to  give more leads to Agnes's parentage.   At the moment we have a Richard and an Agnes born Borgue. Nothing else in the OPRs 1766 to 1785.

Hi,

Thanks so much for everyone's input.

I have checked ScotlandsPeople but, other than the marriage, couldn't trace anything. Agnes Black married James Hannay in 13/12/1791 in Kirkcudbright & possibly died there 16/02/1838 (can't be 100% sure as the record I have checked just says 'widow of James Hannay'). They are my 5 x great-grandparents. Can't find any further info iro of Agnes's brothers,Richard & an unnamed male child.

Regards

Coreen

Hi again,

Following on from previous messages - I have just found on this website a post from Scatza who is researching the McClune family from Dunrod & he has some notes regarding a Janet Meiklemean who married James McClune. The McClunes & Meiklemeans are apparently recorded as being Covenanters & originated from the SW of Scotland.

This may give me  a little more to go on - don't like to jump to conclusions but surely Janet is related somehow to Ann Meiklemean??

Regards

Coreen

These were the two Janet's that I found in my Kirkcudbrighshire MIs.   Do you have any Janets in the descendants?
