Wallace (Wallis) family Clutton, Somerset
« on: Monday 10 November 14 08:01 GMT (UK) »
Would anyone be able to help me find what happened to Clara Wallace, born at Greyfield, Clutton in 1853. She was christened on 2nd November 1855 at ? Church, Clutton.

Her parents were John and Elizabeth Wallace from Warwick. Previous posting  Topic: The Wallis or Wallace family of Bishops Tachbrook, Warwickshire

In 1871 census Clara Wallace (spelt Wallice) was listed as living in Holt, Bradford upon Avon, Wiltshire. An employee and living with the Eyres family. Clara then goes off the radar.

No marriage that seems to fit or death, although I did find a Clara Wallace, aged 28, who died in an asylum in West Yorkshire in 1882.

No other Clara Wallaces in Censes after 1871 with a place of birth listed as Greyfield/Clutton/High Littleton.

Her mother, sisters and brother were all in London around 1871 and later.

Thanks
Rosie

She really goes off the radar doesn't she  :(

Perhaps we could find the Clara that died in 1882 on the 1881 census?  Just to see where she came from in case she is yours.  Unlikely but you never know.

Can't see a birth in Yorkshire for a Clara around 1854 but she may have been married or born elsewhere I suppose.

I can't see a Clara Wallace born Yorks. either.
I did find a Clara Wallis b.C.1854 in service in London in 1871 but that was also listed as her birthplace.

Hi,

I wonder if this is the Clara WALLACE that died in 1882, here in the census of 1881,

1881  RG11/4575  f.159  p.13  Stanley cum Wrenthorpe, Wakefield
"West Riding Pauper Lunatic Asylum"

C W    Patient    Unm    Female    27    None    Not Known    Imbecile

Unfortunately as there is no POB then it doesn't make it any easier to know if it's your Clara.

Regards,
Daisy

I reluctantly think this may be my Clara and feel very sad if it is. Why would she be so far away from her family? Her mother and most of her sisters were in London. Her father was in Somerset and Gloucestershire. I'll never know, but will keep looking in the hope I do find her married and things are ok.

Clara's brother also goes off the radar. His name is Herbert Wallace born 1855 in Greyfield, Clutton. I've got him in the 1871 census in London, but not found after this.

Thanks for your interest.

has a 1875 hit for a Clara Wallace, article title is "A Dishonest Domestic" (oh dear), involved the Bristol Police Court so might fit in terms of area.

Any chance she was in prison in 1881?
(I don't have access to the newspaper report)

Neither do I have access to newspaper archives. I'll search on Ancestry and see if anything comes up.

Thanks
