missing medals for private alfred joyce-morcott rutland
« on: Monday 10 November 14 21:30 GMT (UK) »
many years ago my grandfather alfred joyce and his wife olive moved to corner house morcott rutland.

he had been a soldier in the lincs regiment and then was called up to the 5th battalion london regiment

and served in the great war.he was awarded two medals they being the british war medal and the victory medal.

during the 1920's we are told he lent them to a policeman in the village for a parade and they never found their way back.

on the back of these medals is the key to his service number confirmation of regiment rank etc.

can anyone shed a light on the policeman or his family so we can get the information we require .

thanks

gerry lawrence

If you don't get a response on the policeman, there are only about 3 medal cards for an Alfred Joyce, London regiment. The medal cards might be able to show which man was transfered from the lincs regiment to the 5th London regiment and that will gain you his service number.

Did he have a middle name? War forum people can quite often narrow your search down
Wemyss/Crombie/Laing/Blyth (West Wemyss)
Givens/Normand (Dysart)
Clark/Lister (Dysart)
Wilkinson/Simson (Kettle or Kettlehill)

thanks to both of you for your replies and yes we have done both and printed down the records feeling that 3903/302364 is possibly our grandpa.
but he was wounded in one of the battles at ypres and sustained war wounds which necessitated
him being shipped back to blighty where he convalesced in the military hospital in bourne lincolnshire where he met our grandma who was a red cross nurse.
but these records show no details of his being shipped back.
so is that 3903 him.those medals that the policeman inadvertantly did not return for some reason
have such important information for us.

the medals were lost over 90 years ago?
Anyone connected with that incident would be dead by now.

And the chances of any remaining family member knowing what happened would be slim-to-none?

As KG says, the chances of anyone knowing what happened to these medals is very slim. It may be that the medals were sold or passed to a museum. Have you tried a letter to the local paper in the area your grandparents were living?
