The Humphreys family of Panteg Wales
« on: Monday 10 November 14 21:56 GMT (UK) »
Had a link to a ancestry site over the weekend and knowing diddly about my fathers side of the family....(divorce etc) I thought I'd have a bash.
Little did I know that Charles as a young copper from Newport Staffs would leave as a young man and settle near Panteg and marry a local girl Hannah Williams in the mid 1850's.
I have sort of traced their family and found that their eldest Thomas was instgrumental in the WW1 memorial in Panteg, with his eldest Walter dying in nov 1918 just b4 the end....bugger. His younger brother  Percy DCM MM died and is buried in Egypt 1921.
Thomas had 7/8 kids and he is my Great GD.
So..............I am searching for anything and everything on anyone............

Cheers

It's better for everyone if your a bit more specific in what your asking for as you will get information you might already have & you will also get information about various members & branches of the family which will get very complicated.
Do you have his marriage cert?
I'm assuming he's this one:
1861
Charles Humphreys  30 PC Newport Salop.
Hannah Humphreys  28
Thomas Humphreys  7
Martha Humphreys  4
Frances Humphreys  1
Amelia Williams  56
John Williams  16
RG9; Piece: 4010; Folio: 5; Page: 3

Probably him in 1841;
Edgmond (2mls. from Newport)
Dorothy Hample  43
Charles Hample  11
Mary Hample  8
Fanny Hample  6
James Hample  4
Mistranscribed as Hample.
HO107; Piece: 905; Enumeration District: 10; Folio: 7; Page: 10

I can't see a Baptism for Charles but I believe these are his siblings;
Joseph Humphreys ch: 5 June 1822 LONGFORD BY NEWPORT
Sarah Humphreys ch: 22 February 1824 NEWPORT
William Humphreys ch: 6 November 1825 CHURCH ASTON
Elizabeth Humphreys ch: 11 November 1827 CHURCH ASTON
Mary Humphreys ch: 25 September 1831 CHURCH ASTON
Frances Humphreys ch: 9 February 1834 CHURCH ASTON
James Humphreys ch: 18 October 1835 CHURCH ASTON
father: James Humphreys
mother: Dorothy
James Humphreys married Dorothy Penson 1822 Longford Salop.

1851 has this:
Dorothy Humphreys  54
Mary Penson  6 neice
Which confirms it.
HO107; Piece: 1998; Folio: 200; Page: 10

Dorothy:
Dorothy Penson ch: 1798 LONGFORD BY NEWPORT
father: Andrew Penson
mother: Mary

Edit:
FindMyPast has a Charles Humphreys Bapt. 1829 Church Aston.

I think what I would want to do was see Charles' Baptism just to confirm his father's name as you don't have it at present although I'm 95% sure it will be James.
You can have a 1 month sub. on FindMyPast & download all the baptisms, marriages & burials for the families then you've always got them for future reference.

Thanks Jim. Following down the line I have read from the Pontypool post that Thomas, who would be my Great GD,  was instrumental in putting up the WW1 memorial in Panteg to commenorate several including his eldest , my Great Uncle Walter who dies just before the end in early Nov!

Hi Mike, Just came across your interest in Charles Humphreys (1829-1912). I have a lot of info on him, as Charles was a younger brother of my Great Great Grandfather William Humphreys.
Charles parents were James and Dorothy. He married Susanah(Hannah) Williams 22nd Nov 1852. They had 10 children. Charles was born in 1829, in what was then known as Aston under Edgmond better known today as Church Aston which is about 5 miles from Newport Shropshire. Charles had 3 brothers and 3 sisters, Joseph(1822-1900) , William (1825-1865), Elizabeth (1827-) , Mary (1831) ,Frances (1834)  and James (1835).
One of Charles children, Thomas , married Margaret Ann Francis , they had 9 children. Two of those children Walter (1888) and Percy (1891) were born in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa when Charles was stationed there , that is why he could not be found on the UK Census for 1891. I could go on for longer , but please let me know if you need something specific. All the Best, Gary Humphries

Hi Mike , The spelling of the family name changed with my Great Grandfather, Ernest Richard, son of William Humphreys. The spelling of his name , fluctuated between Humphreys and Humphries, all through his life, on all official documents. The spelling finally sticking with Humphries for all his descendants.
