Dating a photo from Leicester, probably lateish 1800s
« on: Tuesday 11 November 14 05:23 GMT (UK) »
Hi Folks,

Amongst a number of old family photos I came across the attached.  I am trying to date it as I don't know who these two are.

Can anyone help please? :)

That the woman was photographed with a daughter but no husband may imply that she didn't have one at the time.  Any other photo I have from Leicester was either an individual or a family group. If I can get an approximate date it MAY help me work out who this was. (If you know who they are, then GREAT!).

Thanks in advance.

I'm no expert on dating, but William Rowe established his photographic studio in Leicester in 1870 and died in 1885, so I would assume the photo is somewhere in that time period.  :)

Thanks, the dates are helpful.

I note that on some of his photos there is "Rowe, Photo" (as in mine), on others "Rowe" and on others there is "Rowe & Co".  This could help narrow the date a little if I could find details.

There is a CHANCE these could be  family members from the early 1860s.

I would say late 1890's to early years of 20th century. Ladies had puffed sleeves during the 1890's up until the late part of that decade.

1870's & mid-late decade.
The plainer style outfit & short bodice cut away at the front was a late decade style & the plain backdrop with just a side curtain was typical of the 60's & 70's.
For the purposes of verification can you show all of it including the outer edges & the back.
The absence of a husband doesn't necessarily mean she's a widow.
Something else to bear in mind is that the child could be a boy as they were dressed the same.

Thanks Jim,

I'll try and find the original photo.  I THINK it had been stuck in an album and the rear ruined.
Yes, I should have thought more about the gender of the child - I have a photo of my father taken around 1922 and he was dressed in what we would expect to see a girl in today.

I'll get back to you.

I'm guessing mom only wanted a photo of the child but he/she wouldn't keep still & she's had to step in.

Finally found the reverse of the photo - but not the original front yet. Does this help date it?
Thanks folks.

Yes, absolutely classic late 1870s and it even looks as if it might have a Marion (the printer) number at the bottom, but it's hard to see with the handwriting over it and it may only be the printer's stamp. The Marion codes started in 1880, which is still possible.

Any chance of a closeup scan of the very bottom of the back?
