Presteigne death 1960/70 ish
« on: Wednesday 12 November 14 09:21 GMT (UK) »
Larry (Lawrence, Laurence) Davies (Davis) lived and died in Presteigne.  To find his approx. date of birth I am trying to find his death. After days of trawling the various site I have come up with nothing and lets face it, he has got to be there somewhere. This was, according to the family between 1960 and 1970 ish.  I have just sent for one of his children's birth cert. (from 1917)  but this won't tell me how old he was.  The death could have been registered in Kington Herefordshire or Ludlow Shropshire but he definitely died in Presteigne.

Thank you for looking.

Have you got his marriage certificate to the mother of the child whose birth cert you have ordered?

No, no marriage cert.  The remaining family know nothing.  Only that Larry and his wife Sarah lived in Presteigne as long as they know i.e. from the 1940's.   I am working backwards with no knowledge as to where they came from.  Rumour has it that it might be Ireland, I have already jumped to that possibility but came up with nothing so I'm going back to basics.

what's the mother's maiden name on the 1917 birth?

I'm thinking along the lines that Larry/Lawrnce/Laurence wasn't his birth registration name. May father is known by everyone as John but that's not the name his birth was registered as.

The person whose birth cert. I have sent for is Mabel Davies b.17 Feb 1917 (According to the family).  Where I do not know BUT there is a birth in the dist. of Knighton, first qtr 1917 whose mother's surname is Morris.  This is the one that I have sent for, just hoping that the father is Larry! and the mother is Sarah Morris!!

If you are sure that he passed away in the area 1960-1970's, I would be inclined to check electoral registers (easy search if you know the street address he lived at), probate calendars online upto 1965 at Ancestry, or cemetery records (try to council).

I see from their website that Hereford Archives are currently closed, but the British Library in London has the Brecon & Radnorshire electoral registers from 1949 to date if you could make a trip.

That was a good idea re. the electoral roll - I am waiting for an e-mail from the Hereford Archive office, hopefully telling me where I can access them.

Thank you Mike - I think the sensible thing for me to do is to have a look at the electoral roll, then I should know who I am looking for.  I have also found a death in 1964 and 1965 for a Leonard Davies (Hereford).  So at the moment his Christian name is any ones guess.  The Davies family lived at Old Mill Presteigne between 1940s and 1960s.
