Horace Hagger cannot find death information
« on: Wednesday 12 November 14 13:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi Folks, I have come here after gathering quite a lot of information from the Findmypast free weekend but already I have come across my first stumbling block.

I have gleaned that my grandfather was called Horace Hagger (as was my father) born 1908 in Rotherham but the birth details have no mothers name and also looking at the census from Rotherham of 1911 I cannot find any trace of him but there is a Robert Hagger of 21 Psalters Lane Rotherham who had several children and two of those named Florrie a girl born in 1905 and a boy 1908, I think I am on the right track here as when my grandmother was still alive, living in Hull and remarried by this time, she used to talk of someone called aunt Jessie now I took it for granted she was one of her sisters but looking at this census record there is a Jessie Hagger born 1897 who was obviously the older sister of this boy with a girls name, I am thinking that someone filling in the details at the time got mixed up.

I found out my grandmother's maiden name was Westlake, married Horace Hagger June 1929,and  I know they had my father in 1929 followed by two brothers in 1932 and that my Grandmother remarried as after my Grandfather died, I have no knowledge of how he died either and I can find only one Horace Hagger that died after this time and that is a soldier who has same year of birth from Rotherham.

So my newbie question is how do I find out the year of the death of my grandfather to either corroborate or discount that this soldier is actually my grandfather.

Welcome to Rootschat :)

I'm not sure what you mean about a boy with a girl's name, but it is important when looking at census information not to rely on transcriptions but to look at the underlying record.  We cannot do full 1911 lookups on here but using free index information it seems to me that the Rotherham family you are looking at are likely to have had a son "Horrice" aged 3.

So that looks promising as a match for your Horace.

Presumably the death you are looking at is the 22 June 1943 one from WW2?

Unfortunately his CWGC record does not provide details of his family:

Horace's death certificate may help link him to your family - e.g. your grandmother may have been the informant of his death.  However given that he was a casualty of war there may have been another informant.

Reference details as follows:

Death, Jun qtr 1943

Horace HAGGER aged 34

Leeds 9b 349.

You can order the certificate for £9.25 (inc P & P) direct from the GRO: www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

I cannot see any other Horace Hagger who fits the bill, so it does look likely that the 1943 death was your grandfather's.

You are welcome.

Your grandmother's remarriage appears to have taken place in Hull in 1945 (if I am looking at the right one) so that would be consistent at least with her having been widowed in 1943.

Welcome to Rootschat.

There is a public tree on line with Horace - his parents are given as George Robert Hagger
1869  and Alice Fox 1873.

He is buried at Harehills Cemetery http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=59976542

Horace's parents seem to have married as Robert Haggar (24) & Alice Fox (20) on 21 Mar 1893 at West Bromwich.

Robert's father: George Robert Haggar

Alice's father: Daniel Fox

Robert's likely birth is as George Robert Haggar, Mar qtr 1869 Aston - tying in with the family tree found by groom.

I was unable to find her remarriage even though I knew her 2nd husband was Frank Dunn.

Oh I see.  Not the 1945 Hull marriage then (I saw the mention of Hull in your first post and picked the wrong marriage, evidently).

Marriage, Dec qtr 1943
