I would suggest that it was highly unlikely (but not impossible) his body was returned to England. Lack of refridgeration and embalming would have meant his body would not have survived the long voyage home especially in the heat of summer.

There's a Philadelphia Death index entry for Joseph Elsey born about 1838 died 11 July 1873, is this your relative?

THanks so much for the info. Will try to find out more.I think it could be him.I have his birth as 1840 but 2 or 3 yrs out is nothing. I know for sure it was 1873 July 3rd.But I was looking Baltimore because I had found a possible brother of his. May be this person was not his brother.I will research again. Thanks again, big help.

In case you didn't see it, the actual death certificate can be seen here with a free account at Family Search - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-11095-124921-72?cc=1320976  The occupation of carpenter matches the occupation on the passenger list.

It looks like the cemetery was called West St., which may be this one today:  http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=2335038

Hi thanks for all the help.I am fairly sure it  is  him.But I cannot find who the family travelled out to.As I am sure family members were already in the US.I previously thought it was Thomas Elsey  who was in Barry. Michigan. As he  had  a brother Thomas born approx 1831. Who disappeared from UK records.I found Thomas the  correct age born UK in the 1870 census USA.Would be grateful if any one knows of Philadelphia Elseys around the time Joseph died.
