Am looking for a Stephen Gatrell who spent a year in Pentonville Prison in 1851 before being shipped off to Australia.  Can anyone help please.

Hi

....Welcome to RootsChat  :)

Stephen Gatrell arrived in Australia Jan. 1852.

The records for Pentonville Prison in the 1851 census do not give the prisoners names only THEIR initials and I can't find him there, but there are some born in Sussex, but there are also plenty of entries with birthplace unknown,  it's like finding a needle in a haystack unfortunately  :-\

Hampshire Telegraph and Sussex Chronicle etc (Portsmouth, England),
Saturday, June 8, 1850

Stephen and George Gatrell, suspected of been con? in the late robbery at Mr Wright's stores, were on Saturday again brought before the County Magistrates, and examined - and were again remanded for a week. These examinations are strictly private.

Many thanks to you all for the info.  I am still trying to figure out if in fact Stephen and George were brothers.  I have all the information regarding Stephen here in Australia.

They appear to have the same occupation and lived together.

Taken from the trial article..

Hampshire Telegraph and Sussex Chronicle etc (Portsmouth, England), Saturday, July 27, 1850

Henry Wright sworn - I am a auctioneer and upholster at Chichester, I occupy a warehouse in the parish of St Andrews. I used to rent if from prisoner George;  but within the last year i rented it of Stephen. Prisoners were carriers and occupied a loft in the warehouse.
