Looking for Lowe family of Manchester.
« on: Friday 14 November 14 09:02 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I have found the Lowe family on 1841 census living in Beswick Manchester but can't find their baptisms/births on the Lancashire parish regs. I know that Johnathan is the father and that Thomas age 25ish is the son but there is another Thomas age 19ish on the same family. I can't find any of the baptisms for any of the people on this census page. Can anyone offer any advice as to what to do next?

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

I think the family are transcribed as Lower in 1841. Jonathan Lowe(r) has a wife  Grace in 1841.  I wondered if Grace was a second wife having found the marriage below on the Lancashire Parish Clerk Online Site?  In 1841 Jonathan is listed as a weaver.

26 May 1836 St Mary the Virgin, Bury, Lancashire, England  Jonathan Lowe  Weaver, Widower theParish to Grace Lowe  Widow, the Parish

Could the two Thomas's be children of  the previous marriages??

Hello and welcome  :)

Kay's info looks very good.

Who is your ancestor and do you have later census info?

There is a marriage of Thomas Lowe of Beswick, father Jonathan  to Martha Platt in 1844 and a witness is Thomas Lowe.
1851 shows Thomas as born abt 1817 but in Lancaster, Dorrington  ???

However, 1861 shows him born 'Holkem' - Holcombe ? which  is Bury.
1871 has him born 'Torrington' I wonder if that should be Tottington - Bury

Sadly, by 1891 he has died.

Regards
Heywood

Hi, thanks for your input. The Thomas Lowe who married Martha Platt is definitely my ancestor. I too have been looking at Holcombe and Tottington in Bury bad I am sure he was born there but can find no trace of his birth wih Johnathan as his father. Grace is almost certainly not his mother and I think the other Thomas must be a cousin or relative somehow. Thomas' marriage certificate states Johnathan as his father.the witnesses at Thomas wedding are Thomas Lowe and Mary Hyde. The younger Thomas on the 1841 census married a Mary Hyde in 1846  in Manchester.Nancy on that same census is in Bury  on the 1851 census as a visitor. Just think they must be from Bury but there is no trace
