Finding births prior to 1837
« on: Saturday 15 November 14 16:51 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone tell me how I can trace births prior to 1837 if the families don't appear on the parish records for baptisms in Bury when I'm fairly certain that my family ( LOWE ) were born there. What happened if they didn't get baptised? I be really grateful for any advice on how to trace them.

It depends what information you have already... Have you found a family in Bury in the 1841 census? If so, as you said it's likely they were born there, but they may not have been.

What resources have you used when looking for baptisms? Maybe the parish where your ancesters were baptised hasn't been transcribed yet. There are transcribed records for Bury on Ancestry if you have a subscription.

Also, there may have been some spelling changes along the way. I have some relatives with the surname Lowe, which was occasionally spelled as Low in earlier records, probably when the vicar guessed at a spelling because the family didn't know themselves! Also if you're searching online, consider different spellings of the parents' names, particularly abbreviations (Wm for William, etc.).

Have you tried searching Lancsopc?
If you can't find them in Bury they may be in one of the surrounding parishes.

Hi, thanks for your input. I have found my ancestor on a Quaker register with her own name living with a couple with a totally different surname. They have registered her birth but there is no mention of who her parents are!
