Peter William Hayes

im starting to research my late father in laws family history. His name is Peter William Hayes born 13th dec 1921 in Poplar London.I would be grateful for somewhere to start

There's a possible birth for a Peter William Hayes in Lewisham in 1921 gives MMN as Wood.

He probably wasn't registered until 1922, because of how late in the year his birth was

Unfortunately, there is no birth registration for a Peter W. Hayes in the Dec.qtr.1921 (or Mar.qtr.1922 if a late registration) anywhere.

There is, however, an entry for a Peter W. Hays in the Dec.qtr.1921 at Pancras (mothers maiden name Butler).  Possibly the GRO mistranscribed 'Hayes' when indexing.  I certainly can't find a marriage between a Hays and Butler although there a few between Hayes and Butler.  The only way to determine if this is indeed your Peter would be to purchase the birth certificate to see whether the birth dates are the same.

You mention Poplar - as others have said there is not a relevant birth registration there but there is a marriage in 1958 which you'll find on FreeBMD at www.freebmd.org.uk.  I am not posting his bride's name in case she is still living but you will find it indexed there.  If they are the right couple they were living in Poplar in the 1960s.

If that is the right Peter, his marriage certificate would tell you his father's name and occupation which would help you trace back to the next generation.  If it has not been inherited through the family you can order a copy from the GRO for £9.25 at www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ using the index information found on FreeBMD.

thank you all for your help with my post.The only other information I have is date of marriage is 27th march 1953 to Dorothy may hayden.I believe he was married previously but do not know the date.any help to get started would be appreciated thank you
