Bastardy records - Somerset
« on: Monday 24 November 14 19:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I have just discovered that one of my 3XGGF (Worthy Daniels b 1806 Laverton, Somerset)was one of several Base Born children to a Sarah Daniels b c1796 in Road, Somerset. Is there any way of accessing the bastardy records without taking a trip to the records offices in Somerset ?

Thanks.... Jim

Hello
Could you check your dates please?
Since Worthy had an older brother born in 1801, I think your year of birth for Sarah must be a bit out :)

Hi Bev, Yes a bit of number dyslexia ion my part it should have been 1769 and yes she was baptized in 1780 as you have spotted.

It looks like she had several children and I was wondering if there were any poor law or bastardy orders against her and the fathers assuming she said  :)

Thank you.

Jim

Have you tried searching the catalogue on Somerset Record Office website. Often such things are recorded as Affiliation orders.

Always search on the mother's name -- the child's name isn't usually recorded. If the records are there - but can't be seen on line -- you can request a copy - probably for about £5 (that's what it costs at my County Record Office).
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

You could also try the Online Parish Clerk for Rode, which appears to be handled by the Frome Research Group

Thank you both Bev and Pennines. Have carried out quite a bit of Googling on the subject so I think perhaps more direct contact with the 'locals' is now called for.  :)
