Hi elsa.alan

Welcome to Rootschat

Could you give more information about William

His birthdate, death etc.
Also area to search for would be helpful to RC people to help you

Or parentage if you have it

This name gets a lot of hits on google search, do you know if he has died?

Regards

WO96 was for Militia records. Is that what you have found?

Hi and welcome to Rootschat, their is a British Army Service record for William Thomas Waddell b 1843 St Heliers, served with the Royal Engineers Service Number 4806, a lot of info re William's service and his marriage to Louisa Jane Burrows 26th October 1869 Teheran, Persia with daughter Edith Mary shown as next of kin, unfortunately cannot see any sign or mention of who his parents were?

He is in the 1881 census

Since he was born in the parish of St Heliers, Guernsey (Channel Islands) a birth look up would be good.

His birth would appear to be just inside compulsory registration for his island, there are some good resources here

Entered Chelsea RMA 3rd December 1849 aged 6. Father serving/served in Royal Engineers - which would be Royal Sappers and Miners then. I have that he joined 26th February 1857. That will be close to his 14th birthday. My date is correct - you need to look at his attestation again

Inmates could be taken if either parent had died. Army records did not give parents until much later. It would be easier to find his baptism.
