Daniel McAinsh of Clackmannan
« on: Tuesday 25 November 14 16:31 GMT (UK) »
For 35 years I have searched for this person. Daniel born 24/6/1814 in Clackmannan had a son James born 1/11/1839 with Elizabeth Paterson. Daniel is given as deceased on James wedding certificate dated 20/7/1865. The family rumour is that Daniel accepted the blame for Elizabeth's condition and was paid to take the blame. There is some circumstantial evidence in that James had a large house in Clackmannan. Should anyone come across any information on Daniel McAnsh or Elizabeth Paterson I would be grateful to receive.
As this is my first post I started tracing my family history after Gordon Honeycombe's programme on ITV about 40 years ago. On day 1 the registrar in Alloa allowed me to use his office and copy what I wanted and I bought a copy of James' wedding certificate which was typed so a copy is a copy and every time I was able to visit NRH Edinburgh I would do my homework and copy about 40 certificates for the price of the seat.

Hi, Was Daniel's mother Margaret? I can see a Daniel ( Mcansh) on the 1841 census with an estimated birth of 1816 in Clackmannan with what appear to be 2 brothers too. If this is the right person then we know who we are looking for.  :)

I think I can see James in the 1941 census and he is listed as "Nephew". There is an Elizabeth Paterson aged 30 too in the same household.

Then in 1961 with Elisabeth on their own.

Not sure about the big house for James  :-\

Think this is him and mother in 1861:

Elisabeth Paterson 44
James McAinsh 21 coal miner b. Clackn, clackmnshire
Address: Coatfold (hamlet), Clackmannan

What did it say on James' marriage cert regarding his mother Elizabeth? Did she still show as alive then?

In 1881 he is living in Castle street, Clack. and it seems he stays there up to the 1901 census.

Most of the replies have the correct people. On marriage certificate James, son of Daniel McAinsh (deceased) Elizabeth Paterson is listed as a Domestic Servant. Most interesting reply is the 1841 census which does not list Daniel as living with Elizabeth and her son. Assuming James was Daniel's son he must have been around in January 1840 and James is given as the illegitimate son in the parochial record of his birth Oct 1840. One has to remember that before statutory records began in 1855 the parochial records were kept by the church session clerk and are an incomplete record of events.
I've been chasing Daniel's death for 35 years with no success so have expanded family tree sideways and to date have 2782 individuals. Thank you for your efforts and suggestions
