Welcome!

I think Charles was an assurance agent as I can see him with children on the 1881 census living in 50 new street, East Dean. Children are: Elizabeth F age 4, Charlie age 3, kathleen age 1, infant age 0 and then Eliza Smith age 71 listed as Mother in law.

 I hope this helps!

FamilySearch has his baptism:

Charles Kennett
Christening 18 Sep 1853
EASTDEAN NEAR CHICHESTER,SUSSEX,ENGLAND
Father's Name:    Aaron Kennett
Mother's Name:    Caroline

Also his marriage to Fanny (mistakenly transcribed as Janny)

Name:    Charles Kennett
Birth Date:    1854
Age:    21
Spouse's Name:    Janny Smith
Spouse's Birth Date:    1850
Spouse's Age:    25
Event Date:    02 Feb 1875
Event Place:    Littlehampton, Sussex, England
Father's Name:    Aaron Kennett
Spouse's Father's Name:    Reubin Smith

I see that in 1881 he was described as an agent for the Prudential insurance so maybe he had to travel up north as part of his job.

In the 1970's Prudential began to employ lady clerks. It had built a new building in Liverpool in 1856 ish and insurance was starting to become big business. Maybe that's where the money was!

In 1911 he seems to be living as a widower at 176 Breckfield Road North Everton Liverpool as a cotton warehouseman. He was probably just finding work wherever he could so he moved around a lot.
