Hi, I've just discovered probably been on the wrong track so need to start again and not make the same mistakes so I would appreciate help as I'm a rookie !
What I know is  Leonard Birchall b19/9/1906 in parish of St Philips Sheffield on his attestation (but aged 31 on his marriage cert. 19/11/1938). He died 1/2/1942 whilst serving. I need to find his father.
His parents on attestation papers shown as  John and Kate 68 Broad Lane(address hard to read, might be wrong and later his nok is his wife  shown at one point living at c/o 63 Barnaby St Derby, again hard to read).
On marriage cert , he was in the army at the time, his father is shown as John Charles Birchall spoon and fork filer.

Have you found him on the 1911 census?

Sorry but we can't help you with that here

if not try the hints and tips here

Also, be aware that each company supplying 1911 census information makes their own transcriptions so if you cant find him on one site try another.

For 1911, try looking for Lenord Birchell, age 4! :o
(as transcribed by Ancestry!)

FindMyPast has him as Leonard Birchell.

In both cases the family are living in Ecclesall.

Thanks, I didn't find him on 1911 before but didn't know it might be different from others. So will try again.
I had originally made assumption he was raised by an uncle as found a family with right name and dob of child, father Richard who had brother John.
Didn't get birth cert. as didn't think it would show me more than what I had and of course if a child was moved within a family that wouldn't necessarily show up any where official.

Any tips on best next steps ? Ah, Thanks K Garrad for the  latest post ! Spellings are a nightmare for me  !

Actually Ancestry have transcribed it correctly  :-*  It's FindMyPast who have mistranscribed  :-X
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Spellings are a nightmare for me  !

Spellings are a nightmare for anyone involved in Family History! ::)

Spelling simply wasn't that important back then. And the further you go back; the less important spelling was!

That 1911 census is correct, because his parents match what you said earlier!
Also 6 siblings!

Ha ha yes KGarrad!
I can see now that I need to purchase  credits for 1911 in order to move forward. Thanks everyone for pinning that down for me at least now I know it's worth doing  (yes, im a bit slow on the uptake lol). Hopefully that will help me with 1901 too as couldn't find John Charles and Kate there before. Cheers.

If you're resident in England, then you could try your library or local Records Office.  A lot of them have the Library edition of Ancestry, so you could look at the census records for free  ;D
