Baptism of Mary BRICE, Wiveliscombe
« on: Saturday 29 November 14 05:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi folks

I'm struggling to find a baptism of Mary BRICE.  Census records suggest she was born in Wiveliscombe around 1795.  She married Thomas SULLY in Wiveliscombe in 1825, and probably died there in 1878 (Mar Q 1878 Wellington aged 82).

I've tried FreeReg and the Somerset OPC site but haven't found anything that fits.  Can anyone assist?

Mary would have been about 30 when she married.  I wonder whether she was a widow??

There is a marriage in 1815 in the village of a Mary Millett to a William Brice that looks a possibility https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NXT8-BL4

Thanks Trish and Kay, this ties things up nicely.  :)

Thomas SULLY looks like he could (or had to) turn his hand to a few things.  By my reckoning he was in turn a weaver, labourer, malster, labourer, malster again (at wedding of daughter Mary in 1853) and then a baker.  I think its kind of nice that in 1871 at the age of 75 the widowed Mary was living with her baker/grocer son Thomas SULLY and his family, and possibly still manning the front counter -she's described as a Shopkeeper.

I'll have a closer look also at Fanny SULLY, described as Thomas' 19 year old daughter in the 1851 Census.  I suspect she was probably his adopted niece (baptised 16 Mar 1833 to George and Ann).

And while we're in Somerset, any thoughts about the baptism of Jane WEBBER.  Nothing in Wiveliscombe that fits with a 1794 marriage.  There's a FREEReg burial of Jane SULLY aged 68 in Wiveliscombe on 7 Dec 1834, which could be her.  It may well be that we've got another widow on our hands.
