Why five burials on the same day?
« on: Saturday 29 November 14 17:37 GMT (UK) »
In finding my ancestor William Withers miner from Shurlet buried sept 17th 1727 at Willey Shropshire parish church. I noticed that even though there were only ten burials for the whole of 1727 five were all on the same day namely sept 17!
Anyone hazard a guess why this might be?
Plague?

Andrew

Accident?
Disease?
Natural disaster (e.g. flooding)?

Just the 3 most obvious reasons

The entry for John Davies looks a bit squashed......perhaps the vicar was a bit slow in entering the burials in the regster and put them all as the same date.   :-\

It was clearly only a small place if there were only 10 burials throughout the year. Possibly an epidemic?

Interestingly genuki tells me that John Williams, the minister who signed the page, only took up his appointment on sept 15th 1727

Yes maybe they buried before on various dates and the new curate then officially commended them to God all on the same day...

I wish all parish registers were as clearly written. I too have noticed that it appeared that parish register entries were written up even annually. Perhaps that's why so many entries are missing. Written on scraps of paper at the time and some were lost before the actual parish register was written up.

The Society of Genealogists even computed the percentages of missing entries by baptisms, marriages and burials years ago.
