Coroners Inquest: FERRIS 1892 COMPLETED
« on: Sunday 30 November 14 13:59 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I'm following up on a family story about my Great, Great Grandfather Edward Stewart Fiott Ferris (died 23rd August 1892, Venwyn,Uny Lelant). He came from what seems to be a lineage of absolute rogues! Family legend has it that he was murdered by being dragged behind a horse. I've just obtained his death certificate and it says he was 'accidentally killed through being thrown out of a carriage'. It sounds pretty fishy to me. An inquest was held after his death and I'd love to see that document. Does anyone know if that is possible? The inquest was held on the 25th August of the year of his death. Failing that I'd be eternally grateful if someone would search local newspapers to see if they can find any reports of the accident/attack. I live in East Anglia and have no opportunity to come to Cornwall. Can you help me solve the mystery or what happened to him? Many thanks, Cathy :)

??

Gloucester Citizen 25th August 1892

While Mr. Edward Ferris of London was driving near St Ives on Tues evening, in company with his two children and another gentleman, the horse suddenly shied and the occupants of the trap were pitched out on to the road, where they were found by some passers-by.   The children were unhurt but the two gentlemen were in an unconscious state, from which one subsequently recovered.   Mr. Ferris however was found to be suffering from a severe fracture of the base of the skull from which he died in half an hour.

Similar report in Northampton Mercury of 26th August 1892

The other gentleman was Thomas Jenkyn, from whom Edward Ferris had hired the trap.

Tony!

That is fantastic! Tragic but fantastic :) My naughty Granny making up a tall tale of treachery! How did you find it? Do you have a subscription to the British Newspapers archive? I cancelled mine a few weeks ago because I wasn't using it and then I realised I needed it again. Oh dear.

Thank you for helping

Cathy

The Cornishman - 1st Sept 1892

The remains of the late Edward S Ferris, accidentally killed the previous Tuesday by a fall from a trap, were taken to London by the 10.38 a.m. train on Friday.  A large number of friends were on the platform to witness the departure and many tears of sorrow or of saddened sympathy were shed for the bereaved widow and fatherless children.

I have found the report on the inquest, but it is too long to transcribe on here.   I am unable to message you  until you have made three postings.
