A Variety Artiste
« on: Sunday 30 November 14 15:36 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
I'm searching for information regarding the improbably named Tom Cecil Maynard Lonsdale. The 1911 census has him living in Liverpool. He was described as a Variety Artiste, born in Liverpool, c1882. I can't find him anywhere else. All help appreciated.
                    Many Thanks

Could he be the Cecil Lonsdale in 1901/1891?

In 1901 he is 18 nephew born Liverpool living with the Boel family.

In 1891 he is 8 living with widowed mother Margaret and sister Eva.

I think Tom Maynard could be the stage name of Cecil Lonsdale?  There are several mentions of a Tom Maynard in the British Newpaper archive, between about 1920-1950. He seems to have been a comedy actor and singer appearing in light opera and pantomime. One snippet mentions that he was with the Carl Rosa Opera for a while

In 1917 he placed an ad in the Liverpool Echo under 'Entertainers'
28 December 1917
"Tom Maynard, the well-known Comedian, at liberty few evenings. concerts, Smokers etc terms moderate. 162 Chatham St Liverpool"

The Stage archive site has 138 hits for "Tom Maynard".  His strapline was "the dotty one".

I know this is an old post so you may already have your answer .. but could this be the person you are seeking.  I came across this memorial for Cecil Lonsdale (Tom Maynard) at Preston Cemetery North Shields, Tyne and Wear.

very interesting - they are in Canning Street in 1901 census - Residence: 42, Canning St
Liverpool (Part Of), Lancashire
..........................................
then this happens
Baptism: 21 Apr 1903 St Luke, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Cecil Lonsdale - [Child] of Margaret Lonsdale
    Abode: 42 Canning St.
Notes: A. [Father's name not entered]
    Baptised by: F. W. Hopkins
so - has the Widow Margaret had a baby ?   or is it Tom Cecil Maynards sister - or - is it the wrong family ??? TWO Cecil Lonsdale ??
now that's a puzzler ??
....................................
Cecil Lonsdale married Helen May Sonnex in 1916 in Gravesend - June qtr during WW1

Or was he baptised as an adult?

There is a probate 1952  for a Cecil Lonsdale /Tom Maynard or Cecil Haines. It then says see Lonsdale for Maynard. Probate to  Helen May Lonsdale, widow.
