Ellen Crumpton
« on: Tuesday 02 December 14 14:25 GMT (UK) »
Ellen Crumpton married Henry Robert Scopes on 05 Feb 1873 at Trinity Church in Marylebone, London. Her age is given as 'of full age'. Her death in 1928 gives her age as 73 which would put her birth at around 1855. On the marriage certificate, her father is listed as James Crumpton - occupation being a Coachman. If I assume that 'of full age' she was over 21, then I think she may have been born in 1850 and be the same Ellen Crumpton on the 1871 census living at 47 Berners Street, Marylebone. I am struggling going back to 1861. I have found an Ellen Crampton living at 52 Chester Mews, Pancras whose father was a coachman but whose name is given as James. John's wife Harriet is a widow in 1871 living with her son George. Would it be reasonable to think that I am on the right lines - Ellen's father's name as John / James and not given as 'deceased' on marriage cert? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks. Catherine

Thanks for that - I think I have been so fixated on her age given on her death certificate! Also, if she was born in 1851, she was older than Henry who would only have been 17 at the time of the marriage, although his age was given as 19.

Yes I would not become too fixated on age, especially if she was older than her husband which may have motivated her to downplay it a bit.

In the family you have found, the George who was aged 3 in 1861 appears to have been registered as George Parr Crumpton in 1857; the middle name leading to this possible marriage of the parents where the bridegroom is indeed James, not John:

Marriage, Sep qtr 1841

James CRUMPTON
Harriet PARR

St Pancras 1 275.

Brilliant! I hadn't looked up George as yet. Sometimes you can't see the wood for the trees!

Annoyingly they are thoroughly elusive in 1851.

The son James who appears aged 17 in 1861 was I think registered at birth as William James Crumpton (Dec qtr 1844 Marylebone).  He married in 1876 - father "James Crumpton, deceased".

They should also have baby Ellen with them in 1851, her birth having been registered in the first quarter of that year, also in Marylebone.

James Crumpton was a groom when he married Harriet Parr at St Pancras Parish Chapel on 1 July 1841 (less than a month after the 1841 census).  You can see details on Ancestry.

Thanks so much for your help. I have now found Harriet on the 1841 census living at 7 Green Street Mayfair with her father William a publican. A little Googling shows that William Parr ran the Green Man public house at 7 Green Street. Would not have found that without your assistance - thank you again. Catherine

Have a look at the Ellen CARRINGTON (A*try) born 1851 in Marylebone on the 1851 census. I'm not sure what to think.
