If you have the full details 1911 census, Mike, you should check what information is given by Sarah as to number of children born alive to the present marriage, and number of children deceased.  There are some possible infant deaths in Chesterton as well that might line up.

But to get more information about what was going on, I think you need to get some death certificates for this family and see if the causes of death line up with the family stories.

Managed to find the 1901 punch up.
Apparently Sarah & her ma-in-law Mary Ann were leaving a mother's meeting when Sarah hit Mary Ann with her brolly & threatened to knock the bows off her bonnet for calling her an old black & tan.
She was bound over for 6 months but asked the Magistrates if they could make her ma-in-law hold her tongue...they said they couldn't do that.
Have to feel sorry for Robert don't you.
The childrens columns are left blank.

I would love to have know her!
I have ordered death certs for her, her deceased children and Robert.

Also it does now appear that the son was called Charles.

A summary of Robert Nelson - All now confirmed by documentation.

Charles Robert James born June 1892 died 20th June 1906 age 14 of Caries of the spine (also known as Pott's disease) & general exhaustion.
Walter born around 1904 died 17th March 1907 age 8 of Measles & Pneumonia
Also at this address in the 1911 census was Violet E Nelson who is listed as a boarder at this address.
In 1907 & 1906 occupation was listed as Contractors Carman
In the 1911 occupation was listed as Road Sweeper working for the Urban District Council

Donald Patrick Robert born 21st July 1913 died 20th December 1997
Robert died from a cerebral haemorrhage 30th May 1949 at 150 High street Chesterton
Occupation at time of death listed as Retired Road Forman (Corporation)
Burial plot in Fen Ditton cemetery Plot No. 2535 28th October 1949 granted to Annie Nelson address given as 150 High street.

I think that the family tale of the fire killing Sarah and the 2 boys can now be discounted although I won't know about Sarah until I get her death certificate.

I am waiting for a couple of certificates and will post more info soon.

Thanks for all the help I wouldn't have known where to start without it

Mike
