RAINES Genealogy - Broken Hill SA

Is there anyone who is a member of Genealogy SA who would be willing to do some lookups for me please?

I have located a number of relevant events on the free index and would be interested in the additional details only available to members.

I am attempting to do some family research for an acquaintance so do not wish to join in order to look up just a few names.

Hello Cando. I have few of each - births, deaths and marriages. (there are some death notices as well but I have also found a couple via Trove, so the death notices are not a priority at present)

I was just about to add to my question: Is there anywhere else that would give me the same information as that found on the Genealogy SA indexes? I expect that I will need to purchase some certificates but am trying to get as much as I can via other means first.

My first foray into SA and I feel like I am a complete newbie again.

Right here on rootschat .....a number of us have CD's of the SA bdm's.  Even though more information is offered on SAGenealogy on the death notices, you have to pay to for a lookup, which I think is quite expensive.

Before you consider purchasing any SA certificates [expensive], please read the scant information that is included on the certs.  Not much more than is on the CD indexes.  There is less on the SAGenealogy Indexes.  The Colony of South Australia followed the English system of recording bdm's whereas other colonies followed the Scottish one.

You can purchase transcripts for less than half the price of a certificate.  I recommend Graham Jaunay. Google for his website.

PM me some names and I will help you with bdm's.

I have a number of other resources including electoral rolls and directories which MAY be helpful.

To avoid paying for lookups for death notices, if we can locate the date of death, you can request the State Library of SA to help with lookups.  I think there is a limit to the number they will do.

Lots of SA cemeteries with online indexes.

Hi Cando, I went out earlier but left my light on, hence the delay in getting back to you.

You are brilliant! Many thanks for offering to help. I hesitated to ask because I was getting on quite well with just the indexes but I have come to a bit of a standstill and am now finding myself going round in circles.

I will get check where the gaps are in my research, get some names together and post here later.

One more quick question - branches of the (mining) families I am researching move between Broken Hill/Daly/Kapunda regions. Would you advise asking Broken Hill specific questions on the NSW board? I am asking because I think there may be a bit of movement between the two States when it comes to mining families and research in these areas seems to be fairly specialised.

I would greatly appreciate confirmation of any or all of the following events if possible please. Some of the information comes from family sources, some from indexes and some from online. In most cases I have years, but not exact places or dates, so would appreciate any filling in of the blanks.

Edwin James Raines married Ethel May Wallace (nee Sampson) in 1918 in Daly district.
I am hoping to find the exact date and place of marriage.

I am looking for a couple of the children born to this couple. Some are known to still be alive so I will not mention their names and I have accounted for 5 using the indexes. I am looking for a daughter Alma or Elma who died when about 2 or 3 years of age - dates and places unknown I'm afraid. I cannot see a likely child on the indexes with these parents. Also, an Arthur date and place of birth and death unknown. Not much to go on I'm afraid ....

Edwins parents:
James Edwin Raines married Florence Adelaide Cock in 1896 in Daly. I would like to know the date and place of marriage?

Looking for birth and parents of James Edwin Raines in approx 1872. May or may not be SA. I have plenty of information about death of James in 1927.
 
Florence Adelaide Cock b 1878 in Daly - parents Thomas Cock and Eliza Ann Riddle. They married 1862 Mt Barker. I found another child Thomas Henry b 1873 Daly.  What are the dates of the above and are there any more children born to Thomas and Eliza? Florence (Raines) died in 1949 - confirmation of date and place please.

The following information was found online so I would appreciate confirmation if possible -:
Ethel May Sampson b 31 Jan 1894 Kapunda - confirm parents are William Sampson and Emily Tremberth. This couple married 28 June 1878 - confirm date and place of marriage.

William Sampson married Emily Trenberth, Daly in 1878.
His parents are William Sampson and Mary Hattam who married in 1855 but where and what date?

Ultimately I wish to find their immigrations and then head back to England. :)The online source has William Sampson arriving in Australia in 1847 and Mary Hattam arriving in1854, but I have nothing on the Raines family.

Being a complete novice with NSW research I would appreciate some assistance please. I am attempting to help an acquaintance with their family history and find myself a little out of my depth.

The Raines family were miners/labourers who lived around Broken Hill and later SA (Kapunda, Daly regions). Initially I am trying to find out as much as I can on the cheap, and limit certificate purchases to the real essentials. So far I have had reasonable success using the online indexes.

This search is further complicated by a family story of a name change. I was told that Edwin James Raines was born in 1899 in Broken Hill. His mother's surname was Jyles, Edwin was born a Jyles, and although the family surname passed down the generations as Raines, it should have been Jyles. (I have only seen 'Jyles' once or twice as a surname so presumably it could be Gyles, Giles, Jiles etc etc). This story does not to make sense but it is what I was told.

I immediately suspected illegitimacy, however I have disproved this family story:

I found that Edwin James Raines was born in 1899 in Broken Hill, and his parents were James Edwin Raines and Florence Adelaide Cock. I am wondering if the story of the Gyles surname (if true) may be a generation or two further back? 

I know that James Edwin died as a result of an accident in 1927 (this was widely reported in the newspapers) with reports giving his age as 55 and 59 indicating a birth around 1868/1872.

Ancestry give his marriage to Florence -: 11 July 1896 in Kadina, with his father's name as James.

I don't know which generation emigrated to Australia but I couldn't see my James Raines on any NSW records, though it is likely that I missed something. I did find a 28 year old James Raines from Somerset arriving in Port Adelaide in 1866 on the "Charlotte Gladstone" - perhaps this could be James Edwin's father James? How could I go about linking the two?

I would be very grateful for any help with this family.
