Slight discrepancy with the age of James arriving in 1866 being 28 years old, and the one marrying Elizabeth Morris in 1869 being 24 .... though I realise fibs and mistakes did occur.
Raines is not a very common name is it?  :-\

Cando you might have something with your theory ... Childs/Gyles/Gilds?

Red warning: Thanks Cando.  ;D

Am currently going through the finds so far and writing them all up in my notebook.  ;)
A few days ago I found a death in 1876 registered in Clare for Florence Raines father James (no mother named) who fits with the death of the Florence Raines b 5 Aug 1876 Blyth Plains. Just thought I would add that to the pot.  :)

Report of that death in a newspaper and in SA parents are not named on death certificates.  In the case of a child's death the father is often recorded as a relative.

In eleven years Martha only aged six years ::).

Parents of Eliza Riddle were Thomas Riddle b abt 1814 Redruth and Loveday James. His parents were George R and Mary Davey.
Thomas Cock's parents were William Cocks b abt 1801 Redruth and Susannah Teague. The family were here in 1840 not long after SA was settled. I have his parents pencilled in as as William C and Margaret Penberthy and grandparents John C and Grace Pollard.

My main interest has been how the Cocks, Riddles, Nettles, Nichols and Sunstroms link in with my lot, the Whinnens, Julians, Blees and Hardings.
UK: Lee, Swift
CON: Davey, Harding, Hocking, Rule, Whinnen
AUST: McIntosh

Maybe reduced her age to match Henry's?  :-\

It seems to be a fairly complex dysfunctional family. As to whether or not James Raines committed incest I am not sure - possibly a bit of 'tit for tat' and tale telling going on between James and Martha Elizabeth. ::)
