The Batley Parish Registers also show that a James Mortiman (spelt like that in all cases) - also had at least the following other children, apart from James in 1704;

Martha 12.2.1695
Hannah 25.11.1697
Elizabeth 13.2.1699
Edward 18.2.1701
Julian 7.4.1707

All baptised at All Saints, Batley.
As Keyboard has said -- there are no other clues, such as occupation or abode, given

Thankyou Keyboard 86 and Pennies. I have an index only which shows the spelling as James Mortimer Batley 1704. No view of the original document. I'll certainly investigate further. I've been stuck on this for quite some time so thank you once again!

Hiya - it looks to me like Keyboard does have the right man - but one of them is Mistranscribed - because this is exactly the same date - 25th Feb 1704 in Batley - but on this record he is MORTIMER and the father is James

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JQ9S-583

I would appreciate any senior members view - which record is mistranscribed please - and can you explain how to see which record is genuine ?
thanks -  :)

Garstonite -- I am not a senior member, but the filmed records of the All Saints Church at Batley are on Ancestry amongst West Yorkshire Baptisms, Marriages and Burials.

When you look at the actual film for the baptisms of ALL the children of James -- they appear to be actually written by the scribe as Mortiman. However he is a lovely writer -- and quite 'fancy' in his script. It may have been meant as Mortimer -- but looks like Mortiman in each case.

Good Morning, The James Mortimer I have is in the England Select Births Marriages and Christenings. While I can find all the siblings for James in the West Yorkshire records, I have not been able to find James. I'm sorry, but I am very new at this and would appreciate your help. The film no on Ancestry is 1542093, but I haven't been able to see the original document.

Thanks

To view filmed records of West Yorkshire Baptisms, Marriages and Burials on Ancestry;

1. Hover your cursor over the Search box in the ribbon menu at top of screen
2. From the drop down menu which appears -- click on Card Catalogue at the foot of the options which have appeared.
3. In the search box -- just type in 'West Yorkshire' (without the quotes)
4. A whole lot of various datasets for west Yorkshire will appear
5. Click on West Yorkshire Baptisms, marriages, Burials for the period you want, (Note that there are different sets after 1813)

Doing this will enable you to see the various records on the site for West Yorkshire -- in future you can type in the search box just what you want -- eg West Yorkshire Baptisms or whatever -- and you will just get those options appearing.

My advice would be - with any long name -- use a wildcard -- eg an asterisk after the first 3 or 4 letters or so. Viz Mort* for Mortimer or Mortiman -- the search engine will then pick up both.

It is possible that not all West Yorkshire parishes are included in that dataset. Don't forget about the West Yorkshire Non-Conformist set either.

Good Luck -- come back on here if you have problems.
