Yes I knew he was sent away for being 'naughty'!
He appeared to learn his lesson (and a trade) and did in fact do very well after, working as a mess room steward on a ship to New York in 1912. He then served with the Royal Navy during WW1 and after with the merchant navy all his life, including during WW2 at the age of 49! (I found a record of him being transported back to the UK from Australasia after his ship had been destroyed.)
