Temple School Bristol, around 1909 help please

Hi

I have been looking at a document relating to my grand uncle dated 1909 where it states the school he attended at the time (age 12) was what looks like Temple Blue School.  I know of Temple School but not sure about the 'Blue' part of the name.

Does anyone know any history about this school (is blue correct?) during the early 1900s as I can't seem to find any details.

This probable refers to a Bluecoat school.

Oh thank you - does that mean it was a charity school?  If so does anyone have any info about it please?

It would have been a charity school. There appears to be just 1 in Bristol but it wasn't called Temple school.
What document are you looking at?

It's a document which records his 'charge' and admittance to Portishead Nautical School in 1909 for being 'found wandering'.  This presumably meant truanting from his school which is shown as Temple Blue School - well it looks like the middle word is blue!

I've tried to cut and pasted the section into a Word document for you to look at but it's too large to attach to this message.

Did Temple School have 'houses'? The modern incarnation does and I wonder if the 'Blue' refers to the House your Grand Uncle was in.

Also known as T.S. Formidable.

It was an Industrial School, taking on boys referred by courts and Bristol Corporation.

Known to locals (like me!) as The Naughty Boys School!!

Yes I knew he was sent away for being 'naughty'!

He appeared to learn his lesson (and a trade) and did in fact do very well after, working as a mess room steward on a ship to New York in 1912.  He then served with the Royal Navy during WW1 and after with the merchant navy all his life, including during WW2 at the age of 49!  (I found a record of him being transported back to the UK from Australasia after his ship had been destroyed.)

St Mary Redcliffe & Temple School was only formed in 1969, by a merger of Temple Colston School and Redcliffe Boys School.

Maybe it was one of those schools that was referred to?
