1951 Germany RAF (BAFO) Base
« on: Monday 08 December 14 04:26 GMT (UK) »
Hoping someone could help.

Photos taken around 1951 in Germany. The man in the photo is my uncle, and he was a photographer from Glasgow.

First off, the uniform and what the stripes mean.

Secondly, any idea of where in Germany this base could be?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

The stripes are those of a corporal - a junior non- commissioned officer.

BAFO - British Air Force of Occupation. (1945 - 1951) The rest centre could be anywhere.

Hi
I was born on an RAF base in Germany in the late 1950s and have found information about it on this site: www.baor-locations.org

Try the RAF museum, Hendon. They may have some information.

Good evening,

The most obvious places would be RAF Rheindahlen, this was a non flying base on the western border with Holland. Or RAF Wegberg which was the RAF hospital next door.

The other bases were all operational airfields, hardly the place for a rest centre.

From that list you might want to take a closer look at RAF Winterberg which was used as a leave centre  by BAOR (British Army Of  the Rhine)
