The Derby Leather Lace Co
« on: Monday 08 December 14 13:30 GMT (UK) »
I have a cutting from a (local) newspaper or directory regarding, whom I understand, is my great, great etc grandfather. His name is J H Warburton who owned and ran the above company from the five story Excelsior Works, Agard Street, Derby employing some 50 people. He was a wholesale manufacturer and exporter of boot laces. He also had a factory in Germany and appeared to be quite wealthy. The firm's speciality seemed to be the Sandow, a cheap imitation porpoise lace. Family rumour has it that he ran off to Canada with his secretary leaving his wife and kids behind. Can anyone shed any light on my bounder of a relation, I have no dates and only a engraving of a rather handsome young man aged around late 20s to early 30s.

My thanks to anyone who can help
John Warburton

I don't know if this is your Benjamin.
Sheffield Independent - Monday 21 May 1900
Wife Deserter Sent to Prison.
On Saturday, Benjamin Warburton of Batley, Yorkshire, was charged by the Derby migistrates with deserting his wife and eight children. He was formerly in business in Derby as a leather lace cutter, but disapeared in 1895, and was not again heard of until a few days ago, when he was aprehended on a warrant. He was now in business at Dewsbury. He told the bench he left his wife because she was a jealous woman and always "snagging at him." - He was sent to prison for three months without the option of a fine.

In the 1891 Census Benjamin Warburton with six children was living at 15 Webster Street, Derby. Next door at number 13 was John H. Warburton, both Boot Lace Manufacturers. It looks as though it was Benjamin and not John who is the subject of the family rumour.

As well as Benjamin Warburton born 1855, Derby, there is also a Benjamin Warburton, born Dunham Massey, Cheshire in 1854?!

Much more likely to be the chap in court, I would think?

Apparently the day he came out of prison his wife issued him with a summons for desertion.
In court he claimed his wife had been unfaithful with her lodger, an accusation later withdrawn.
He said he was unemployed & only earning 25s. a week.
He was ordered to pay 15s. a week.
This was 1900.
