SWan/Swann of Antrim
« on: Monday 08 December 14 23:41 GMT (UK) »
I am a one name researcher of Swan/Swann of Antrim. Right now I am looking for the family of Thomas Swan, grocer and weighmaster at Randalstown up until about 1910. They were members at First Randelstown Presbyterian, and I believe Thomas' wife may have been Mary Ann Gourley.
Any takers?

Have you checked the 1901 and 1911 census?

I have indeed. The family is present in Randalstown in 1901 but not in 1911. One of the daughters married there in 1910, but I can't find any of them in 1911. I believe after the father died the family left Ireland, and I believe some went to Winnipeg Canada around 1918. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a will for the  father Thomas Swan, although his siblings and father are all documented in wills.

Using GRONI online to cross-check the births of all of the children shown in the 1901 census indicates this couple is Thomas Swan(n) (father also called Thomas) who married Mary Ann Cummin(g)s (father James) on 5 July 1884 in Antrim First (Millrow) Presbyterian Church.

I'm assuming this is Esther Anna Swann, who married Thomas Carroll Johnston in Randalstown First Presbyterian Church on 24 June 1910. This couple appear on the passenger list for the S.S. Celtic sailing from Liverpool to arrive in New York on 4 September 1910. They were heading to his uncle at an address there.

The 1921 Canadian census has a couple that fits this Thomas and Esther Johnston, living in Manitoba, several children, and a couple of other residents called Swan.

Edited to add:  In the following link to a 1916 census, for "Ivan" read "Anna":

You are indeed an aristocrat. That marriage (Swann-Cummins) somehow escaped my notice, and I thought I had all the Antrim First marriages!  Thanks you so much. And if I had just done this query a year ago, I could have driven up the highway and met Anna Swann Johnston Suffron.
