I think that all medical records, including asylum, are locked for 100 years?

Looking at TNA I think any records will be with Nottingham Archives - but , as has been said , I think it's highly unlikely that records from the period concerned would be open.

Forgive me for being curious, and this is a rheotorical question that does not necessarily need an answer, but I am wondering to myself what sort of records you could possibly want in order to help with your research? If you already know that she was admitted there, and it is so recent, then I guess you know a little of her circumstances. Isnt the only other thing to check whether or not she was discharged,  or whether she died there? Are there otner rellies around who know? Or is she still there? If normal research leads you to think the latter, then as a relative why not just contact the place direct?

I do know that in the 1990's people who were distresed or confused, perhaps by the death of someone close, were admitted on a voluntary basis so that their needs could be best assessed.

I would think that records would be still with the local NHS trust.

Looking at the dates for the asylum, should this post have read 1890?

Apparently it closed completely in 1994.

Basically I'm looking into mental health as a part of my course, the person who was in what was known as the lunatic asylum at the time is me dad. I don't feel comfortable asking him about his mental episode he had, I just want to know what caused him to be on medication for the rest of his life and why he acts the way he does :)
