How certain are you that the chap on the naturalisation papers is the chap who married in 1867?   Have you any of the Victorian BDM birth certificates for the children of that marriage?  If so, what information is given about Charles, and who gave it?    Vic BDM birth certs are very informative too, and spread across two pages too.

So far, I have not found any indication that your Charles was ever known as  Carl/Karl.

Cheers, JM

I wonder who was the informant on the 1898 death cert?  And if that dc will show any reliable info about Chas?   eg,  how long in the colony,  confirmation of his marriage and children etc.

Cheers,  JM

Found the Naturalisation papers online at the National Archives of Australia website

Application lodged February 1898 gives:

Charles Patterson, aged 58 years, born  Hamburg, Germany, a miner.

21st June 1859 arrived in the Colony of Victoria by the ship Mauritus, from the Port of London, England.

Ever since arrival, being a period of 38 years, has been a resident in Victoria.    Signed Charles Patterson,  8th February 1898.
Oath of Allegiance 14 February 1898

Cheers,  JM

These proceedings seem to be very close to his burial date!

Yes, and likely a valid excuse for perhaps not getting exact arrival information correct, and not adding "Germany" after writing the city name (Hamburg).

I wonder if there is a Probate File? and if it may help.     I do think there needs to be some validating certificates to help advance the quest.

Son Carl/Karl @ Charles Frederick Patterson immigrated said july 1859 via mail steamer the Mauritius
From Hamburg via London to Australia

I am being pedantic but it is important that you don't see something that isn't there - no mention of the ship coming from Hamburg, he says he came from London.  It would not be unreasonable to think that he was perhaps working as crew onboard.  There was no ship named Mauritius arriving in Vic on that day, but according to the shipping Gazette there was a ship Leopard from Mauritius which arrived on the 21st.

Just for your info, the steamer Mauritius was a British ship, more about it here http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/lines/generalscrewssc.shtml

It was not travelling to Australia in 1859 as it was used to transport troops from England to China, India and Italy through the 1850s and then Bermuda from 1860.

The Mauritius which arrived in 1858 from Batavia (Captain REGNIER) was a small vessel, probably cargo, 296 tons, and had one passenger onboard.  Unfortunately for that time period you will not get a crew list.
