Help extending the Meyer tree
« on: Saturday 13 December 14 02:21 GMT (UK) »
Hi all-

Thanks for putting all this information together! I have been doing basic genealogical research for a while, but am having trouble tracing one particular line. Below is a summary of the info I have on the individual and the resources I have used to try to keep digging. Sorry in advance for the long post.

Name: Ike Meyer
b: 28 Mar 1868
d: 22 Jun 1943

m: Ida Hoff
b: Mar 1875
d: ?

Children:
William, b: Nov 1894
Albert, b: 28 Jul 1895
Elbert, b: Jul 1896
John, b: May 1897
Andrew, b: Dec 1899
Jennette, b: 1901
John, b: 1903
Anna, b: 1905
Clarence, b: 1907

According to census records, he was born in the Netherlands and immigrated to the US in either 1889 or 1890, and his wife immigrated in 1891, not sure where he immigrated through. By 1900 he was in Chicago, which is where he died. I believe his father's name was William and his mother's name was Jennie Nanninga, both born in the Netherlands, birth and death years unknown. The 1900 census lists the last name as "Meyers".

Much of this information comes from an Illinois death record obtained through Ancestry.com (which I no longer have a subscription to). I have not been able to find an obituary, and the Chicago Tribune site is less than helpful.

I have searched for immigration records through Castle Garden for both Ike and Ida with no luck. I tried Meyer, Meier, Meijer, Myer, and each of those with an "s". I also searched for any first names starting with "I".

There is some family lore about the first Meyer coming to the States as a way of getting away from some trouble in the home country, potentially changing his name in the process. Based on the information from the death certificate, that doesn't appear to be true, and I want to make sure I exhaust all other options before going with that conclusion.

Please let me know if you have any thoughts on other avenues to try or if you have any information which might be useful. Thanks in advance for all your help, and sorry for the long post!

Thanks for the response, Carol. I forgot to mention it, but I have looked there before. I just did another run-through and was unable to find any matches. Looks like a great site, but no luck for me!

I put Ida Meyer in and there are quite a few around 1891. Also did they bring any of their children with them from the Netherlands, I'd check them out too
