2 marrige records
« on: Sunday 14 December 14 15:01 GMT (UK) »
Hello all , looking for a bit of help.

I have a marriage of Thomas Linton to Mary Keats in 1778, but have 2 x marriage records entries for the exact same date but 1 in Ruishton and 1in Buckland st Mary. Can anybody shed any light on this information. Thomas was of Ruishton parish.
Many thanks in advance
Mark

Hi Mark

Welcome to Rootschat :D

I was going to suggest that it might be banns date rather than marriage, but I see on the 14 July 1778 Ruishton marriage on Freereg that Mary Keats parish is North Curry rather than Buckland St Mary. Where did you find the Buckland St Mary entry?

Jan ;)

OK I've found the West Buckland entry on the IGI. It is extracted rather than contributed so should be reliable, so I'm puzzled. You really need to see the original parish records to see if they both exist.

The one that shows for West Buckland film number   599466  looks as though it could be Phillimores marriage index.  Also on that film number is Ruishton.   It would not be the first time that the LDS had the wrong parish against an item that appears on a film with multiple parishes

There is also reference on familysearch for a couple with the same names in Allington, Dorset in 1778.

This entry is from the same film number 599466  ::)

Thanks for both your replies
Are we saying then that lds records are wrong or a very good chance of being a mistake/ wrong?

FreeREG show records for Somerset, and agree with the Ruishton entry, also stating that the vicar wrote Mary's surname as Keates, but that she signed as Keats.  The West Buckland records for that time are from Phillimore, and there is no entry appearing for Thomas Linton and/or Mary Keats.  There is no entry for Thomas Linton and/or Mary Keats in the records for Buckland St Mary.

As I personally have very little faith in Family Search and their transcriptions, I will comment no further  :-X
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thanks again
I have seen phillimore records for this marriage in ruishton, so I think I'll stick with everybody's advice, I'll discount the Buckland marriage information.
Was hoping to link Thomas marriage with Buckland st Mary, as I've seen various marriage s in that parish of lintons, and was trying to link Thomas with these other Linton s as I cannot find much about his early life.
Back to the drawing board ;)

Many thanks for your help
Mark
