I believe the full name of the head of household at 11 Hogan St was William John Edward Chambers.

Baptised 20.12.1876 at Prescot.  Parents: Thomas (labourer) & Elizabeth, of Eccleston.

Married 21.11.1896 at St Bartholomew, Salford* to Elizabeth Shepherd.  Father: Thomas (labourer).

Died 1 July 1916 on the Western Front.

*This is the same church where Rosella/Rosalia married in 1905.

He may be a child of a previous marriage of the Thomas Chambers found by Yvonne in 1911.

Lan-OPC shows that Rosella's address at marriage (as was the bridegroom's also) was 11 Hogan Street, Salford.  Perhaps Yvonne can confirm whether the combined CHAMBERS/FOSTER household was still there in 1911, as lookups of that census are not permitted on Rootschat.

I've found them in 1891

Thos Chambers, boarder,  age 41, general labourer
Jane Ditto    wife   age 27 Coal Pit Brow
Rosella Ditto  A.Daug      age 6

boarding with James Brownhilll and family at 31 Parliament St, St Helen's.
The enumerator has been lazy and "ditto'd" everyone as coming from St Helen's! And Ancestry has transcribed Jane and Rosella's surname as "Brownbill" despite it clearly beingditto'd as Chambers!
 Class: RG12   Piece: 3026   Folio: 101   Page: 36

Ah well. So this would appear to show Rosella as being the adopted daughter.
Thomas had children enough from his previous marriage, I wouldn't have thought he would feel the need to adopt a "random" child. But I note that Jane's POB was also Shropshire (albeit not on the 1891!) so I wonder if it would be worthwhile looking at her background to see if she had any links with Rosella's birth family?

Ah brilliant!

I think the hosts are actually BROWNBILL rather than Brownhill.

James Brownbill 20, a miner, married Clara Warner 20  at St Ann's Rainhill on 28 June 1886.

His father: Peter Brownhill, a miner.
Her father: Deceased.

I agree that Rosella's description as "A. Daug" in 1891 seems (in the context we know of) to indicate she was adopted, though of course this would have been an informal process at the time and may well have been entirely undocumented.

I also agree that it is worth looking for links based on Jane's Shropshire connection.  Nevertheless Jane appears to have been otherwise childless, so there is the possibility that Thomas & Jane were motivated to adopt an unrelated child.

A possible link is between the FRANCE and NAYLOR families.

Background: Thomas CHAMBERS' first wife Elizabeth was born out of wedlock to Ellen HOUGHTON in 1848.

Ellen & Elizabeth HOUGHTON appear together in 1851.

In 1853 Ellen HOUGHTON married Edward NAYLOR.

1871: Thomas & Elizabeth CHAMBERS are with her widowed mother Ellen NAYLOR.

Fast forward to 25 December 1886 and we have this marriage.

Marriage, Prescot Parish Church

Henry FRANCE 26 bach labourer of Prescot. Father: John FRANCE, decd, farmer.
Martha Jane NAYLOR 21 spinster of Prescot.  Father: Edward (or Edmund - unclear) NAYLOR, labourer.

Sorry - just got a strong coffee and realised that although there may or may not be a link between the families of Thomas' first and second wives, none of it gets us any closer to a link with Lucy JARVIS!
