Rosalia and Lucy JARVIS
« on: Monday 15 December 14 08:51 GMT (UK) »
Hi there.  I am looking for some assistance in finding more information about my family.

I have a birth certificate for my great grandmother Rosalia JARVIS.  Rosalia was born 27th November 1885 and the birth recorded 4th Jan 1886, Wellington, County of Salop.  The certificate records her mother as Lucy JARVIS, a domestic servant.  Her father is not recorded. The address on the birth certificate is Watling St, Wellington.

On her marriage certificate in 1905, Rosalia's father is shown as Thomas JARVIS (deceased) and in the 1911 census she is married to John FOSTERand they are living with her father and mother Thomas and Jane CHAMBERS.  I am wondering if Rosalia was adopted?

•I would like to get a copy of baptism records for Rosalia and I think the following may be her. Rosilla (diff spelling to birth) JARVIS, Wellington all Saints Church, Shropshire, 1885.
•Any information that leads to the possibility of adoption for Rosalia JARVIS or how she came to be living with Thomas CHAMBERS
•Any details of Lucy JARVIS and did she marry a Thomas JARVIS?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated and no doubt will raise more questions...Yvonne   :)

Hi and a warm welcome to Rootschat

The birth cert gives a strong suggestion that Rosalia was illegitimate. It was not unusual to make up the name of a father to go on your marriage cert in those circumstances. In this case she has chosen Thomas  the name of the person who appears to have brought her up.
That would be one explanation.

From the 1911 census......using details for Thomas and Jane CHAMBERS, are you able to locate them in 1891 and 1901 census to see composition of household?.

Might show when Rosalia is in this family. Rosalia might be born into near family of Jane or Thomas.....child of a brother or sister?

EDIT, I concentrated on this Lucy as she has a Sister Rose

Rose Jarvis (registered as Rosanna in 1871, but baptised as Rose) moved to Lancashire (as did Rosalia/Rosella, who married in Salford in 1905).

Rose was in service in Preston, Lancs in 1891: RG12/3442/78/10.

She married in Kirkby in 1893 (per Lan-OPC):

Marriage: 17 Apr 1893 St Chad, Kirkby, Lancashire, England
Miles Henry Parkinson - 23, Postman, Bachelor, Kirkby
Rose Hanna Jarvis - 22, Spinster, Kirkby
Groom's Father: John Parkinson, deceased
Bride's Father: Moses Jarvis, Collier
Witness: William Henry Green; Harriet Roberts
Married by Banns by: F. J. Wilkins

Lan-OPC shows that Rosella's address at marriage (as was the bridegroom's also) was 11 Hogan Street, Salford.  Perhaps Yvonne can confirm whether the combined CHAMBERS/FOSTER household was still there in 1911, as lookups of that census are not permitted on Rootschat.

Anyway, looking up 11 Hogan St in 1901 finds some CHAMBERS but perhaps not the expected ones.
