Skills to read records in Devon, please
« on: Friday 19 December 14 05:01 GMT (UK) »
Once again I am seeking confirmation, please.

The first is a death record in 1785 in Exeter - John Richards is the one I am looking at but there are a few with the same thing - after the person's name -

It looks like a capital Fl but maybe an If for infant -   I do hope it isn't!   ;) ;) ::)  I have seen several entries where infant is written 'Inf'.

The second snip is for two baptisms of Thomas Clapp son of Samuel and Ann of Combe Raleigh in 1765 - both same parents one in Feb and one in April - there is something written at end of Feb line which possibly explains things but . . . . not sure - I assume these are the same child - but as this area was crawling with Clapps, it may not be the case. At the end of the April entry is says privately - I thnk.

Thanks for your expertise.   ;)

Hi Wiggy:

If it is the same Thomas, then it looks like Thomas Clapp was privately baptised on Feb 27 and then publicly baptised on Apr 10.

The word privately was to be inserted into the Apr 23 entry below Thomas.

What do you think?

Think you are correct Sami - so same child - good oh.

What about the other one - any ideas??

And while you are on the job!  Here's one more

Why does this particular vicar require an Affidavit for his burials?   (I now don't believe this is 'mine', but still want to know the answer!   ;) ;))  Doesn't seem to need them for infants - I wonder if they died out of the parish - or something??  The one below Ann also has an affidavit - but the two infants below that don't.

Don't know anything about Affidavits. I'll be interested in reading what the experts say on that one  :)

Wasn't sure about the first question you asked but wondered if it was the initial 'H'. Are there any other kinds of initials or abbreviations on the same page besides the ones you've shown?

Thanks Rosie - that looks like it  - burial was well before 1814.

Sami - I wasn't aware of any other initials on the page.    :-\ :-\    Will look again.

Thank you,  you two for your assistance  (and to Stan for his!   ;))

No - no other initials - only other comment was for three people on that page who were buried (in the church)

Otherwise just the occasional 'H' ot Fl' or 'If'.

BUT there are a couple of younger children noted as son of - so I hope that means this man is adult. - even an older adult!   ;)

Oddly enough no - not a one.    What a pity.   :(

There is an F further up for Feb though and T for Thomas.  Doesn't look like either of them does it.  I think you could be right with the 'H'  --Now we need someone who knows about 'H'    :)
