Is there a way to organize the posts search so as to have the most recent posts first? The dates seems to jump around and often are 4 or 5 years old so may not be actively monitored by their original poster.

Yes ... in the Search window there's a drop-down menu entitled "Search order" that will allow you to place "Most recent topics first".
