Looking for * and *
« on: Tuesday 30 December 14 04:11 GMT (UK) »
(*) and (*) were my penpals in the 50s and 60s. Both lived in Birmingham, and both were probably related to my mother's family (Cartwright or Martin). My mother's married name was Barnes. My name was Jacqueline/Jackie Barnes and I lived in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. I am hoping to find (*) and (*) and would also like to connect with the family of Arthur Cartwright (b. 1866/Birmingham) or Louisa Martin (b. 1874/Birmingham).

Hi Jackie And welcome to Rootschat.

To address your first enquiry about your pen pals, Rootschat is not for tracing living people. Due to privacy laws and because they would be expected to still be living, you will need to edit your post and remove their names.

This link will help you access sites who can help with living people searched. http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=261434.0

As for your second enquiry, is their anything else you can tell us about Arthur and Louisa? Were they married? Do you know the parents names? Where have you got their birth years from? The more information there is the easier it is to rule in/out people with the same name. Which Bermingham?

I hope you enjoy your time here.  :)
Researching: Cronin / Nolan - Gortadrislig, Kerry
Finn/Clifford - Callinafercy and Scort, Kerry
Spillane - Milltown
Also:- Byrne / Tyrrell - Dublin

I would think that this is the marriage:

Marriages December quarter 1892  at Birmingham 6d 33, on the same page:
 Arthur Cartwright
Louisa Martin

How many of Arthur and Louisa's family have you researched, as there could be many descendants?

Have you looked to see if they are in any public trees on ancestry, or tried GenesReunited or other such sites?

Added:
Was it just your Mother's part of the family that went to Canada, or more of your relations?

As regards your penpals, you would need to give an indication of birth year in any future search.  (Would 1942 be too early?)
Also, just because they were living in Birmingham when you wrote to them, does not mean they were born there, so do consider that.

Thank you for your help -- and your welcome. I will check out the link Nettie suggested.
Louisa PM was my mother. I have traced the Cartwright side of the family to John Henry Cartwright, who was born in Birmingham c. 1824. He married Ann Wood (born about 1824 in Birmingham) on September 23, 1844. John Henry's father was James Cartwright. I have no further information on John Henry's parents. Ann's Parents were Joshua Wood (born about 1796) and Martha -- last name unknown -- born about 1796.
I have traced the Martin side: Henry Thomas Martin (born about 1838) married Mary Newman (born 10 January 1840). Henry's father was Henry Martin. No information on his mother. Mary Newman's father was William Newman; his mother, Harriet Moreton. I have been unable to find any more information. Most websites don't seem to have records beyond 1837.
It was my mother's family that went to Canada. I believe there may be a branch of the Martin's in the U.S., but contact was lost when my mother died.

There's a marriage between Joshua Wood & Martha Dewsbury 13/10/1822 St. Martin's B'ham.
Does that sound about the right date?
There's also a marriage between James Cartwright & Maria Bartholomew widow 16/11/1822 St. Martin's.
James was a cordwainer (shoemaker) which is consistent with John's marriage & the 1841 census which shows his mother as Maria who appears to have died in 1846.
There's just 1 previous marriage that I can see for Maria:
Maria Taylor=William Bartholomew 18/8/1806 St. Martin's.

Thank you and Happy New Year.
The 1841 Census lists Emma Cartwright (abt. 1829), James Cartwright (abt. 1771), John Cartwright (abt. 1826), Maria Cartwright (abt. 1791). John is listed as Sp Button Mkr (a spindle button maker?) and James as a shoemaker -- which is consistent with him being listed as a cordwainer on the 1844 marriage certificate of John. Do I have the correct entry?
As I said previously, I have had some difficulty finding records after 1837, and would appreciate any information re: sources for the 1822 marriages -- and the union of Maria Taylor and William Bartholomew in 1806.
Sorry to ask so many questions, but does a Sp Button Mkr have any connection to a bedstead maker -- John's occupation at the time of his marriage.

Jackie, it might be worth checking the following free sites for your penpals. Neither are complete yet, but very recent births, marriages and deaths are being added - so check back regularly of they do not appear yet. (the jury is out as to whether or not that is a good idea, but that is another topic completely.  ::))

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list/?page=1&region=UNITED_KINGDOM_IRELAND

The subscription sites, Ancestry and Find My Past also contain a list of recent events.

There are UK phone books online but you need to pay to view the entire record, and a simple google search of their name may yield results, maybe with the addition of an identifying word or two if their names are common.
