William Frederic Hemming was my grandfather. He was born on 1 January 1895 (120 years ago today!). His baptism was at St Mary Magdalene, Paddington on 7 April 1896 and showed his parents as John Thomas Hemming (labourer) and Alice Elizabeth. They were living at 56 Brindley Street, Paddington. It's family history that he had an elder brother called John Thomas Hemming who was born 30 January 1890 as well as other siblings.
I can find 1911 census where the two boys are together with their siblings and parents. The mother is shown as Alice E aged 43 born in Wandsworth. In the 1901 census, it's a similar thing showing Alice (without the E) born Wandsworth. In 1895, John Thomas was with his wife Alice (again no E but born Wandsworth) and John Thomas aged 1. Also resident was a "servant" who was a hairdresser born in Poland.
I can find a marriage (sadly England, not London so little information) of a John Hemming to an Alice George in Q4 1894. I've sent off for this but don't expect to find much information on it.
The confusion is around Alice/Alice Elizabeth. My understanding over the last few years was that John and Alice had met, had John the younger, and only when pregnant with my grandfather did they decide to marry. I'd found the birth of an Alice Elizabeth George in 1870 in Mile End Old Town and had, for many years, accepted this as my great grandmother. It was only revisiting today that I noticed that the three last censuses showed her birth as Wandsworth which is clearly not MEOT.
A family member gave me a pack of information which I've only just got around to looking at. Included in this pack is a birth certificate of an Alice George born to a Jane George (no father) on 23 December 1867 in the Union Workhouse, Wandsworth but I can't find the 1871 or 1881 census for an Alice George with a mother, Jane George.
We've found a baptism of an Alice Elizabeth George on 2 February 1868 in St Michaels and All Angels in Paddington to a Jane and William George which also says born 23 December 1867.
Who is my great grandmother?
Thanks for reading and any help would be much appreciated.
